SCDP Endorses Continuation of the 1 mill Property Tax for Local Schools
Statement, Sarasota County Democratic Party, 16-February-2010
With a clear majority of support, the Sarasota County Democratic Party endorsed continuation of the 1 mill property tax for local schools during its February membership meeting. With the vote decided, the SCDP joins all 5 Democratic Clubs in the County and a broad-based, geographically diverse coalition of business, civic and parent-teacher groups as well as arts & cultural organizations who believe investing in a good quality educational system will produce a stronger, healthier community. The referendum election will be held Tuesday, March 16, 2010.
In announcing the decision, SCDP Chair Rita Ferrandino said, “In today’s global economy, a 21st century education for students is a critical investment for us to make for the future of our nation and our world. By ensuring Sarasota County maintains a superior school system, we ensure our economic vitality and prosperity.”
The March 16 referendum will allow Sarasota County voters to continue a longstanding commitment to educational excellence. This is an important cause we can all support!
In the eight years since the referendum was established, our schools have used the funding to:
- Reduce class size & recruit / retain the highest qualified professionals in the classroom
(63% of local teachers hold masters degree education level or higher; state average is 39%)
- Close the achievement gap and ensure all students excel academically
- Increase graduation rates and reduce dropout rates
- Raise FCAT and SAT scores above the state average
- Enrich curriculum with art, music and other extracurricular programs
All of these accomplishments are in jeopardy if the referendum is not renewed. Due to consistent underfunding and budget shortfalls at the state level, Sarasota County Public Schools has cut $70 million dollars from its operating budget in the past two years and is projecting an additional $38 million reduction in state funding this year due to the state’s $2.6 billion budget crisis. The projected revenues from the referendum this year are the equivalent of approximately 10% of the annual operating budget (or roughly 500 teachers’ jobs).
Because of Sarasota County’s academic success, we are recognized as a District of Distinction. This 3rd party verification helps us attract businesses and jobs to the area, contribute to good property values, and uphold a great quality of life in our community.
