Reflecting On Our Nation's Progress - Tax Day 2010

Statement, Sarasota County Democratic Party, 15-April-2010

The frustrations expressed by members of the Tea Party Movement should not be ignored. Previous excesses of power undermined trust and confidence in our government.

But today there is real change in Washington, D.C. that we can all take pride in. The Democratic Party and President Obama's administration stand ready to listen to new ideas and constructive criticism. The steps the President has taken during his first year in office give the American people greater accountability and access to government than ever before. America is rebuilding and rebranding itself as a collaborative leader, peacemaker and innovator. Working together will help our country rise to greatness - it is our strength and our hope for a brighter future.

A year and a half ago, the American people voted for change. Over the last 15 months, President Obama has delivered on many of the changes Americans sought. Here are some highlights:

  • The American people waited a century for health insurance reform. Now they have it. President Obama fought to ensure that every American could receive the care they need to stay healthy - whether they are rich or poor, young or old, whether they have a preexisting condition or have been blessed with good health throughout their life. When people look back at the landmark legislation of the 20th and 21st centuries, they will think of Social Security, Medicare, and now health reform.
  • President Obama has also instituted the most sweeping economic recovery plan in American history. In his first days in office, the President signed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act - which includes over a dozen tax cuts. Since then, he has continued to push every day for legislation and programs to help get Americans back to work and help get American families back on their feet. As a result, the American economy is growing again. And for the first time in three years, the economy is adding significant numbers of jobs.
  • The President has made incredible investments in American schools and American students. President Obama signed the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act, instituting the most sweeping overhaul of higher education funding in a generation - and authorizing the largest investment in higher education in American history.
  • President Obama has rebuilt America's relationships with allies around the world. And he is reshaping American foreign policy for a new era. The President has followed through on his call to work towards a nuclear free world - reaching an agreement with Russia to update the START treaty, cutting nuclear armaments in both the United States and in Russia.

We've still got a long way to go - and we won't stop until every American who wants a job can find one - but America is back on the right track. From health care to economic recovery to student aid to foreign policy, President Obama has worked hard to deliver on his campaign promises to bring Americans together and move America forward.

In these trying times, we need people to step up and get involved. Not step out and get photographed. We need positive engagement. But while the Republican Party has fought tooth and nail against the programs to create jobs, expand health care, and open up educational opportunities, President Obama and Sarasota County Democrats have continued to press forward on behalf of middle class American families.
