Dynamic Democrat Announces Candidacy
For Florida Senate District 23
Source: Morgan Bentley Campaign
SARASOTA, May 12 2008 - Sarasota Bar Association President Morgan Bentley, a Democrat who has been recognized for his outstanding pro bono work, declared his candidacy for the Florida Senate today, vowing to return civility and a pursuit of common-sense solutions to Tallahassee.
Bentley aims to fill the District 23 seat being vacated by Sen. Lisa Carlton, who is term-limited. The election is November 4 of this year.
"Too often our legislators are distracted by ideological politics, putting too much focus on conservative versus liberal, right versus left," Bentley said. "I will put partisan politics aside and instead concentrate on common-sense solutions to the challenges facing our State. I will bring a fresh perspective to the Legislature - the perspective of the people."
Bentley's announcement comes on the heels of the recent legislative session in Tallahassee, which resulted in dramatic cuts to essential services and again failed to adequately address Florida's ongoing insurance and property tax crises.
"Regardless of politics, voters want change; they want a new direction. That is my inspiration, and that is why I am running for the Florida Senate," Bentley said. "I am confident that I can inject some much-needed energy into the Florida Legislature by putting to the forefront practical, bipartisan solutions to the state's challenges instead of the partisan bickering that has caused gridlock in our State's Capitol."
A husband and father of two, Bentley has a long record of community involvement and public service. In 2008, Mr. Bentley was selected by the Florida Bar for its 2008 Florida Bar President's Pro Bono Service Award. He was also recognized twice by the Florida Supreme Court for his pro bono work in the community.
Additionally, Bentley served as the President of Legal Aid of Manasota, an organization devoted to providing legal assistance to the indigent in Manatee and Sarasota counties. Last July, Florida Trend named Morgan Bentley, a partner at Williams, Parker, Harrison, Dietz & Getzen, one of their "Legal Up and Comers."
