Sarasota County Democratic Party’s Statement on the Supreme Court’s Decision on Roe vs Wade

The ability of women across our country to control their fate was assaulted today by the very Court dedicated to protecting the rights of every citizen. The U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe vs. Wade has made women in America second-class citizens.

Sarasota County Democratic Party Chairwoman JoAnne DeVries said that the repercussions of the ruling will be life-threatening. “These actions will put women at risk of resorting to back-alley abortions, infections, and even death. And make no mistake, it will be the poorest and most vulnerable among us who are most grievously affected.”

She noted that a strong majority of all Americans have consistently said that they want the rights of women guaranteed by Roe to be preserved. “This was a political decision by an extreme, activist Supreme Court,” she noted. “These Republican-appointed justices reversed a nearly 50-year precedent, bringing their own religious and partisan views into the Court’s decision, and for the first time in our history, took away a constitutional right from citizens.”

On July 1, abortion laws in Florida will change, banning abortion after 15 weeks with no exception for rape or incest. Republican lawmakers have said they will seek further restrictions based on the Supreme Court Ruling. DeVries said that women and their allies will have their say at the ballot box in November, and she urged voters to seek out Democratic candidates who support a woman’s right and freedom to control her own medical decisions.
