Skyrocketing housing cost is the No. 1 concern weighing on most people’s minds in Sarasota. Demand by newcomers is unprecedented, investment funds are gobbling up properties, and homes are changing hands at a blistering pace, pricing locals out of the market. In addition, home insurance costs keep rising fast, and mortgage rates are going up now. As a result, rents in Sarasota County rose at a crazy 47% on average in 2021. All this makes life impossible for local working families and retirees who are already here, pushing them out of Sarasota County. The response has been timid and piecemeal so far.
