Manatee Sarasota Sierra Club Meeting

Our special guest speaker will be Professor Uzi Baram.

Professor Baram will discuss “Rising Sea Levels and Cultural Heritage on the Florida Gulf Coast.”
Cultural heritage on the Florida coast faces a crisis with rising sea levels, with the potential loss of thousands of historical and archaeological sties; framing the decisions on what to preserve are the lessons the present can gleam from the past to build our Anthropocene future.

Uzi Baram is Professor of Anthropology and Director of the Public Archaeology Lab at New College of Florida. He received a BA from the State University of New York at Binghamton and MA and PhD from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Professor Baram’s recent academic efforts focus on the politics of the past in the Eastern Mediterranean and public archaeology in Sarasota/Manatee. He has published and contributed to four edited volumes, dozens of scholarly articles and book chapters and delivered many conference papers on topics ranging from the archaeology of the Ottoman Empire to marketing heritage as well as giving public lectures based on archaeological insights into heritage. With an office overlooking Sarasota Bay, his current research initiative focuses on heritage and rising sea levels.
