Property taxes and housing-related costs have become a defining political issue among Florida Republicans heading into the 2026 election cycle, according to a University of North Florida Public Opinion Research Lab poll released last week.
The survey found that 12 percent of registered Republican voters view property taxes as the most important problem facing the state. When combined with property insurance (20 percent) and housing costs (16 percent), nearly half of respondents cited housing-related expenses as their top concern, an increase from 36 percent in a similar poll conducted earlier this year.
“Housing costs, property taxes, and property insurance have emerged as leading concerns over the past couple of years,” said Michael Binder, director of the Public Opinion Research Lab. “This time around, to get a little more specific, we presented the three concerns as separate choices. If we group them all back together like we did back in February of this year, we’re up to 48% who chose one of those options, compared to 36% of registered Republicans in the spring.”
The heightened focus on property taxes comes amid years of rising home valuations, escalating insurance premiums and widespread debate over the sustainability of Florida’s property tax system.
Immigration (15 percent) and the economy, including jobs and inflation (13 percent), followed housing issues as leading priorities.
The survey also examined attitudes toward a potential policy shift to eliminate property taxes for homeowners. Sixty-three percent of respondents said they would support scrapping the tax, 53 percent strongly and 22 percent somewhat, despite being told that local governments rely on roughly $40 billion in annual property tax revenue to fund schools, law enforcement and other public services.
Thirty-one percent opposed the idea, with 12 percent strongly opposed.
Support for abolishing property taxes was strongest among older Floridians: 59 percent of voters ages 18 to 34 backed the proposal, compared with 71 percent of those 55 to 64 and 82 percent of those 65 and older. Homeowners overwhelmingly supported eliminating the tax (80 percent), while only 16 percent of renters favored the move.
The poll surveyed 797 active registered Republican voters between July 14 and 22, using a combination of phone interviews and online questionnaires. It carries a margin of error of plus or minus 3.9 percentage points.
